The Aruba
Surfing Association and Arusurf had originally scheduled
the Urirama Classic surfing competition to
be held at Urirama Beach. However, due to a large swell
that arrived during the
weekend, contest officials decided that the conditions
at that beach would be too dangerous for surfers
and the contest was moved to a new location; Arashi Beach
and given the name Arashi Special.
Arashi is a very well known break in Aruba, surfers love
to surf here. Surprisingly this is the first time
ever that a contest is held at this beach. Although conditions
were better at this location, it was the longboarders
that had the toughest time. The athletes, the crowd and
the town were all very happy that Arashi
could host this event. The contest was covered by local
newspapers and TV channels, and even some
internet sites: www.coolaruba.com.
The Arashi Special was made possible with the help of the
sponsors: Red
Bull Aruba, Aloe Aruba, Resort & Spa Balashi, Coca
Cola and Gatorade,
local surf shops and volunteers also attributed to this
event. All contest participants
were very happy to receive a goody bag containing a t-shirt,
surf
wax, sunscreen, and a magazine from Happy Mag.
One very important guest at the Arashi Speacial was Mr.
Byron Yagual, an
ISA Judge from Ecuador. Mr. Byron Yagual provided technical
support,
gave a judging course to the judges and serve as the Head
Judge for this
competition.
The Aruba Surfing Association is
working very hard to develop the
sport of surfing in their country. They would like everyone
to know
about the great surf breaks and surfers
you can find in Aruba. |
