During the month of August, PASA embarced on the second stage of their Program, “For the Love of Surf”, the first destination of their program whose aim is helping with the development and growth, was Cuba. In this second phase of the program, a delegation, headed by PASA President, Maile Aguerre, returned to Cuba to give out 20 surfboards for the local surfers.

As it is known, Cuba doesn’t have the resources or know how like other countries in the Americas have, and for that reason, PASA was motivated to take on this responsibility so that surfing can take off there.

Soon before the 10th Edition of the Pan American Surfing Games that will be held in Guadeloupe between the 12th and 20th of November. We spoke with Maile Aguerre, President of the Pan American Surf Association, and she told us a little about the experience in Cuba and also about the anticipation of the up coming Pan American Surfing Games.

How did the idea of donating a good quantity of surfboards to the Cuban surfers come about?
Since the first time that I saw the dire need for anything about surfing and I felt bad for them, it hurt me to think they didn’t have anything. Then I was contacted by some people from Australia that work in the industry and he offered us the boards, with the condition that we cover the costs to get them there. It turned out to be quite expensive to get them there, but worth it!!

Who donated the surfboards?
There were 4 different companies that all work under one in Thailand. One of the companies was Aloha Surfboards.

How many surfers are there in Cuba?
I don’t think that there are more than 100 surfers at the moment.

When do you think that Cuba will be ready to participate in the Pan American Surfing Games?
They are in the process of organization, though it is complicated because if they are recognized, then the government will be obligated to fund them and there simply are no funds available. We are working with them to over come their difficulties.

How many countries will be participating in the up coming Games in Guadeloupe?
It would be good to have as many or more than we did in Chile, but with the crisis and the amount of events the ISA has, it is difficult to say

How would you describe the spot in Guadeloupe and the waves?
It is a tropical place that is very warm, the water is also very warm and the colors of the ocean are spectacular. The waves are almost all on reefs with both lefts and rights. The spot is in Anse-Betrand, and it is a fun wave with a nice beach next to it. There are several restaurants, one which the organizors have a special deal for the participants of the event.

Are there any other countries that will benefit from the program, “For the Love of Surf”?
We are thinking to go to Nicaragua next.

How many countries are member nations of PASA?
Today there are 23 countries that are member nations and PASA awaits Cuba to be able to comply as well to become our newest member nation.

More than anything, we need funds, but anything helps, boards, leashes, warm water wax, blanks, fiberglass, resin, equipment to make boards….etc.

Durante el mes de agosto PASA emprendió la segunda etapa de su programa “Por Amor al Surfing”, el primer destino elegido para desarrollar este programa que apunta al desarrollo y crecimiento del surf fue Cuba. En esta segunda fase del programa, una delegación de PASA encabezada por su presidenta Maile Aguerre volvió a Cuba para hacer entrega de un total de 20 Surfboards para los surfers locales.

Como es sabido, Cuba no cuenta con las facilidades que tienen otros países en territorio americano, por tal motivo PASA asumió este compromiso para que el surf empiece a tomar vuelo.

A poco para los X Pan American Surfing Games que se celebrarán en Isla Guadalupe del 10 al 20 de noviembre, hablamos con Maile Aguerre, Presidenta de PASA, y nos contó un poco la experiencia cubana y también anticipó algo de los próximos Pan American Surfing Games.

Cómo nace la idea de donar una buena cantidad de tablas para los sufers cubanos?
Desde que la primera vez que fui vi la necesidad que tenían los surfistas cubanos y me dolió el corazón de ver la necesidad, luego me contacté una gente de Australia que vieron mi trabajo, y me ofrecieron 20 tablas pero que yo tenía que asumir el costo para llevarlas, que por cierto costó bien caro.

Quiénes donaron las tablas?
Varias compañías, fueron 4 marcas, entre ellas Aloha. Las tablas son todas hechas por ordenador en Tailandia pero de excelente calidad.

Cuántos surfers hay aproximadamente en Cuba?
Yo calculo que no debería haber más de 100 por el momento.

Para cuando crees que Cuba pueda participar en un PASA Surfing Games?
Ellos están en el proceso de organizarse, pero es un tema complicado, porque, si son reconocidos, el gobierno está obligado a darles recursos... Recursos que no tienen, entonces lo mantienen todo así.

Cuántos países participarán en los próximos juegos de Isla Guadalupe?
Sería bueno superar lo de Chile pero con la crisis y todos los eventos de la ISA, está difícil.

Cómo describirías el lugar y la ola de Isla Guadalupe?
El lugar es tropical, hace calor, el agua es espectacular en colores diferentes. Las olas son casi todas de arrecifes, o sea fondo de piedra, ¡son bastante huecas! El lugar tiene una playa hermosa al lado, con varios restaurantes, pero la ola es sobre piedras. Va ser en Anse-Betrand que es alejado del centro, pero buenísimo para olas.

A qué otros países piensan llegar con el programa "Por amor al Surfing"?
Estamos pensando en ir a Nicaragua próximamente.

Cuántos países integran PASA?
Hoy somos 23 y estamos esperando a Cuba. Felizmente PASA está creciendo cada vez más, tenemos el miembro más nuevo que es Martinique, otra isla en el Caribe Francés.

Los juegos de Guadalupe también tendrán un Webcast?
Si.
