RICAN FEDERICO PILURZU DEFEATS ROB MACHADO
TO ADVANCE AT THE LACANAU PRO |
|
 August
18, 2006, San Jose, Costa Rica In 4-foot
waves that finally arrived after two flat days
delayed his Round 2 heat, Costa Rican surfer
Federico Pilurzu showed enough radical and controlled
moves to take 1st place over the renowned waterman
Rob Machado at the Sooruz Lacanau Pro in France.
This was Pilurzu´s first European 6-star
World Qualifying (WQS) event of the year, and the
defeat over Machadowho won the Honda U.S.
Open of Surfing in July
advances him to Round 3 of the tournament.
The tournament, which features other WQS surfers
such as France´s Jeremy Flores, and two dozen
pros from the World Championship Tour (WCT) in
a fight that continues today through August 20
at Grand Plage, Lacanau, Gironde, and offers $125,000
in prize money. Federico´s victory
over Rob Machado is not only great for him, but
for all of Costa Rica, said Antonio Pilurzu,
President of the Federacion de Surf de Costa Rica,
immediately after the heat. |

|
August 19-20, 2006, Wrightsville Beach, NC -- Women
surfers from Maine to Puerto
Rico came together to celebrate the 10th Annual
East Coast Wahine Championships.
Consistent one to three foot waves held through
the weekend while light winds made
for favorable conditions.
New to this years competition was the Global
Surf Industries One Design Fish and
Funboard division, where surfers rode the same size/shape

| JAMAICA:
2006 Junior Champs Series |
|
The Jamaica Surfing Associations 2006
National Junior Surfing Championship Series was held at the Copacabana Surfing Beach on
Saturday, July 15th, 2006.
Twenty three children registered for the event.
The field was divided into two divisions. One
girl and nine boys competed in the under 12
division while two girls and twelve boys signed
up for the under 18 division.
At the end of the day, the top 4 surfers from
the under-18 division competed in a 20-minute
final for a maximum 1,000 points.
The stage was set for a thrilling final with
the islands 4 top juniors facing offat the
famous south coast break. Ackeam Phillips,
Eneson Lightbourn, Jason Pusey and Shane Simmonds
paddled out for the 20 minute final. Eneson
started the heat off with a beautiful ride
which put the pressure on the rest of the field.
As the minutes ticked away both Ackeam with
a best 2 wave total of 13.5 and Eneson with
12.83 for his best 2, caught their full quota
of 10 waves each and had to paddle in and wait
for the final horn. This left some room in
the line-up for the 2 north coast boys to try
and grab a few good ones. Jason made a threatening
charge in the last few minutes, catching his
best 2 waves for 12.16 points but missed second
by 0.67 of a point. Shane scored 1083 for his
best 2 and finished 4th.
The under-12 kids were divided
into two heats of 5 for the first
round which would see the top
6 advancing
to the final. Ivah Wilmot, Shama Beckford,
Ackeam Taylor, Sanjae Lewis, Ricardo Crossman
and Amani Green all paddled out for the 20
minute final. 9-year-old, Ivah caught five
waves which included the highest scoring wave
of the event, a 9.0. His best two combined
for a total of 16.0 points and the win. Shama
scored an 8 point ride totaling 15.0 points
by the end of the heat, which placed him in
second place. Amani Green was a no-show for
the final and was placed 6th.
